The Making of a Pavilion
Suspension
Parametric design, Enscape rendering, Animation creation, Circulation and Thresholds, 3D printing, Laser cutting
The pavilion Suspension is the coalescence of skills and knowledge gained across Module 1 and 2 of Digital Design. The pavilion takes its inspiration from musical waves frozen in time. The curvalinear form is generated parametrically by introducing a third dimension to Lissajous Curves, making the mathematical form inhabitable.

Circulation Diagram

My circulation diagram is curated around a wave-like motion which moves from two descending paths connecting to my pavilion. It reinforces the sound wave concept of the pavilion. I manipulated the surrounding topography to create The landscape as well as the seating form thresholds which further create a hugging motion that guides circulation in a centre-bound, spiralling manner at both macro and micro scales. Various timber benches offer places where people can linger and converse.
Threshold Diagram

The roofing and vines cast dappled shadows on the timber floor create a dynamic threshold which moves and changes across the day. Combined with the screens, they also create a porous threshold, indicating the interior while connecting it to the surrounding environment. I have layered the screens to limit the direction of porocity and create a sense of privacy on the inside. The soft grass marks the footprint of the pavilion while the timber material shared by the benches and the ground establish a blurring of inhabitable thresholds.
Further Renders
My pavilion depicts the beauty anc complexity of sound waves through mathematical principles of Lissajous Curves. The curving gesture of the seating establishes a focal point in the centre of the pavilion, where one could deliver seminars or perform to an audience seated on the tactile timber ground, timber benches or the soft grass. The ground is articulated in a wave-like manner in plan, with stepped, spiraling timber benches to faciliate a non-linear, centre-bound circulation through and around the pavilion. Curved tubes in aluminium accentuate the pavilion’s ethereal nature and allude to the resonator pipes of marimbas and vibraphones, contributing to the pavilion’s musical quality.
