MOMA PS1

This summer pavilion is the 2009 winning entry for MOMA’s Young Architects Program. It is a temporary structure designed to transform PS1 gallery’s courtyard entrance into a loose, relaxed space where people can sit and gather after the ‘main party’; where they are sheltered from the gazes of the event organisers; and where they can act freer and meet new people.

I have modelled the pavilion using section, plan drawings and online images for reference in order to diagram the circulation through the space as well as the thresholds created by the pavilion.

Circulation Diagram
A thorough fair extends from the street to the gallery buildings beyond the courtyard. The top diagram depicts the ‘pace’ of each space and pathway according to the intensity of colour and size of geometry. Seats scattered around the space create opportunities for resting, lingering, as well as a place to interact with others.
Threshold Diagram
The conical canopy draws air up through the opening, creating a constant circulation of air that creates a thermal threshold. On the macro scale, the pavilion itself is a large threshold connecting the PS1 gallery to the street. On the micro scale, each hyperbolic ‘chimney’ bridges the boundary between the inside and the outside, and transitions from one ‘chimney’ to the next.
